NFIP paid building claims by state, 2020-2024

Per-state count, median, first and third quartiles of the building amount paid by the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) on claims with a year of loss in 2020-2024, computed from FEMA’s OpenFEMA dataset NFIP Redacted Claims - v3. Amounts paid by NFIP, not repair cost.

41 states with statistics, 10 with insufficient data. Nominal US dollars, rounded to the dollar, except the 2024-dollar column.

— : fewer than 100 paid claims remain outside the top event (MT), so no median without it is computed and no event dependence is assessed.

How the figures are computed

Records: every NFIP claim with a yearOfLoss from 2020 to 2024. A claim is paid when amountPaidOnBuildingClaim is above $0; the statistics use that amount only, so contents payments are not included. Quartiles are Hyndman-Fan type 7 (linear interpolation), computed on the paid claims of each state. A state with fewer than 100 paid claims gets no statistic.

Top event: the named flood event with the most paid claims in the state. The median without it keeps the claims that carry no event name. A state is marked event-dependent when that median differs from the full median by more than 25%.

2024 dollars: each amount is multiplied by CPI-U(2024) / CPI-U(year of loss), BLS series CUUR0000SA0 (all items, U.S. city average, annual average). The dataset gives no payment date, so the factor follows the year of loss: an approximation. The CPI is not a construction cost index.

What these figures are not

These are amounts paid by NFIP, not repair cost. Uninsured, undeclared or non-covered damage is not in them. They cover only NFIP-insured properties with a paid claim, so they do not represent all homes or all floods. Amounts mix dollars of different years and different disasters, and one event can dominate a state. There is no single-family series and no city, ZIP code or water-depth breakdown. Nothing here predicts the cost, eligibility or claim amount of anyone.
